THE LEGACY OF THE LAKE
By Anita Genna
Seagulls circle their prey,
gently swooping on the water’s surface.
What else will the lake’s mysteries reveal
through facets of a precious jewel?
The water flows onto the beach
rippling at the jetty, creating waves of sound.
My senses soar. Wind, water, sky, the shore.
The heron flies majestically in the sky.
Landing on the point he
waits with subtle patience
for just the right moment to feed.
Beavers seeking wood float through the water
while ducks march onto the beach toward the grass
and the sentinel high in a tree keeps watch.
A fish jumps breaking the sound of silence.
Canoes glide along the shores.
Sailboats criss-cross the coves.
Red shirted anglers in the morning mist
cast their lines with trophy visions.
At dusk the sparkling waters,
waves and sworls glittering
from the setting sun,
swirl towards the dam.
Reflected in the water, a sky
of purples, pinks, and oranges
doubles the beauty of
Nature in all her glory!
Autumn’s colors precede melting snowflakes,
the yellow burst of forsythias,
and summer laughter of children playing on the water.
The legacy of the lake fulfills our dreams anew.
